Tomorrow is the second official race of our New Suffolk Series for 2021. It’s a pursuit race, a.k.a. a Jackrabbit Race.
Boats will start at designated times based on their PHRF ratings, adjusted where necessary for our so-called ‘golf handicaps’.
Race Committee for the race will be Bob & Carol McIlvain.
The Race Committee has decided to use course C1 or C2.
Course C1 is as follows:
C2 is the same course run counter-clockwise: Start-C1(S)-R22(P)-R20(P)-Finish
The course length is 6.53NM and the start times for each boat have been adjusted in accordance with this length.
Start times for all the boats we expect could race are listed below. Data in BLUE are for the Cruising Division and data in RED are for the Spinnaker Division. Some boats appear in both Lists and must opt for the division they choose to sail in before the race starts, as they check in.
A 5-minute warning will be sounded at 5pm and the first boat, Simpatico, will start at 5.05pm. All other boats will start at the time selected in the list below. The start will be in the vicinity of the usual Wednesday Night Race starting line.
Before 5pm, all boats must check in with the RC using VHF radio on Channel 71. Each boat must declare:
If anyone spots an error in the data below (an incorrect rating or sail number, for example), let me know immediately and I may be able to make a correction and relay it to the RC before race time.
I think that’s it. Forecast is for 6-12 knots from the SSW by race time.
The post-race party tomorrow will be a raft-up of sailboats and powerboats organized by Artie Bortz. After the start times listed below, I will paste a message from Artie concerning the raft up.

POST RACE: First PBSA Raftup:
EXCALIBUR will be the anchor boat flying a large PBSA Burgee from the mast in position for finishing racers to raft up. I will monitor Ch. 71 and will let the RC know our final position. Our location will 'likely' be in the northern end of Cutchogue Harbor, i.e. north of the inlet to New Suffolk Ship Yard. I will try to be in a lee of the land if possible. (We avoid the popular Robins Island cove due to fast power boats causing damaging wakes to raft-ups). All participating boats should bring ample fenders to protect their boat, port and starboard, and their neighbors and docking/ spring lines for side-to-side tie ups. The ideal configuration is large boats in the center and progressively smaller boats toward the periphery. If a SMALL boat comes over to be one of the first to raftup, we might ask them to temporarily untie to bring in a larger boat toward the center, like Silent Passage, Kindred Spirit, Resolution or Trading Places. Please note that Stern-to tie ups are STRONGLY discouraged in a raftup as their boat swing and other boat wakes could lead to loss of adequate separation and control and possible damage. The boat you HIT might NOT be the one who agreed you may tie up to. (I've been there and instead of enjoying myself, I just concentrated on readiness to fend off). We want everyone to enjoy themselves!
Depending on the number of boats, size and wind conditions, we may need to ask some additional boats to set anchor, or even a second "row" of rafted boats if the fleet becomes too large. We'll figure it out on the water!
Cheers!
Artie Bortz
